1:00 left0 WPM100% accuracy

How the test works

  • Pick 1, 2, 3 or 5 minutes. A new text is chosen each time.
  • The clock starts at your first key. Green letters are right and red letters are wrong. You can fix a mistake with Backspace.
  • Net WPM counts only the characters that match the text. Gross WPM counts everything you typed.
  • Pasting is switched off, so the result is your own typing.

Typing for government job tests

Some government posts, such as clerks and stenographers, ask for a typing test or a minimum speed. The advertisement for your post states what applies, so check it first. Practise until your accuracy is steady, then work on speed.

Quick questions

How is typing speed (WPM) calculated?

Words per minute counts every 5 characters, including spaces, as one word. Gross WPM is all the characters you typed divided by 5, per minute. Net WPM counts only the characters that match the text, so mistakes you leave in lower your score.

How is accuracy calculated?

Accuracy is the number of correct characters divided by the number of characters you typed, as a percentage.

What is a good typing speed?

Many people type around 40 words per minute. For a government post, the ad states the speed and the test that applies to that post, so check the ad for yours.

Can I paste text into the test?

No. Pasting is switched off, because the test measures your own typing.

Is my result saved?

No. The test runs in your browser. Your text and your result are not sent to us or stored.
